1980 Topps Super - Phil Niekro Gray Back
Few vintage baseball cards carry the size and presence of the 1980 Topps Super #46 — Phil Niekro (Gray Back). This is the harder-to-find gray-back variation of the oversized set: measuring nearly 5×7 inches, each card was designed to look like a framed autographed photo, complete with a facsimile signature across the front image. Topps printed the set on both white and gray cardstock — and the gray backs are the variation collectors sought in packs at the time, making singles like this one distinctly more interesting to variation hunters.
The man on the card is a Baseball Hall of Famer in every sense. "Knucksie" Phil Niekro pitched 24 seasons and amassed 318 wins and 3,342 strikeouts — the all-time record for a knuckleball pitcher. His 5,404 innings pitched are the most of any pitcher who started his career in the live-ball era, ahead of Nolan Ryan. He earned five Gold Gloves, five All-Star selections, and was inducted into Cooperstown in 1997. He and brother Joe hold the all-time record for wins by a sibling pair with 539 combined.
